Cassidy’s #REQUIEMSTORY
Cassidy Imani Bacon, Alto
When the opportunity to audition for An African American Requiem Choir came to me, I was hesitant. Would I be good enough to sing with this choir and be a part of such an important event? However, during that first rehearsal, I remember how great it felt, to be surrounded by musicians, all there for the same purpose. As I read through the beautiful music composed by Damien Geter that first time, something switched.
I am a mixed-race black woman. I have struggled with feeling invisible my whole life. In this choir, singing these words, I feel seen.
I am sad that our performance has been put on hold, especially now hearing about the murders of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor (and no doubt many more.) I look forward to the day I can sing Damien Geter’s music with Resonance Ensemble, while in spiritual unison, saying their names.
