DIVE DEEPER WITH CELILO FALLS

Nancy Ives’ work, Songs of Celilo, featured on tonight’s program is the direct result of a previous collaboration between Ed Edmo, the composer, and Joe Cantrell which culminated in the multimedia orchestral work Celilo Falls: We Were There, commissioned by the Portland Chamber Orchestra and premiered in June 2022 in Beaverton, OR.
Celilo, Oregon was the oldest continuously inhabited community on the North American continent until 1957 when the construction of the Dalles Dam submerged the falls and nearby settlements. The falls were located about twelve miles east of the current day Dalles, and was part of a nine-mile-long Indigenous fishery. For thousands of years, it was the cultural hub of the Pacific Northwest - and still survives under the risen water levels today.
You can read more about this work and its history here, or by checking out the excellent short documentaries linked here and here.
