Resonance welcomes Dr. Bruce Browne back to Portland to conduct this French musical feast! Because our Artistic Director Katherine FitzGibbon will be away on sabbatical from Lewis & Clark researching German requiems in the Third Reich in Berlin, we have the wonderful opportunity to work with Bruce Browne, retired from Portland State University, Portland Symphonic Choir, and Choral Cross-Ties. Dr. Browne will take us on a musical journey through exceptional French literature, designed to mirror an extravagant multi-course French meal. The main course will consist of movements from Poulenc's anti-war Figure Humaine and works from Janequin to Ravel, but we promise to have some fun "amuse-bouche" to tickle your musical palate: French folk music, music from Haiti, and even some French chansons by none other than Leonard Bernstein. In true Resonance style, we are pairing each musical course with visual art projections, selected by Lewis & Clark art professor Benjamin David.

Bruce Browne is Emeritus Professor of Choral and Vocal Music at Portland State University. He was Artistic Director and Founder of Choral Cross Ties, Artistic Director of Portland Symphonic Choir for 22 years, and co-founded Male Ensemble Northwest. He has been Guest Professor at University of Iowa; Boise State University; Oklahoma State University; and abroad at College of London and University of Guadalajara.

The Chamber Choir at Portland State University appeared as guest artists in Spain, the Czech Republic, and Estonia, and sang by invitation at five national conventions of American Choral Directors Association and Music Educators National Conference. They won gold and silver medals at International competitions in Germany and Spain.

He has worked closely with Eric Ericson, Frieder Bernius, Robert Shaw, Andrew Parrott, Helmuth Rilling, and James DePreist, and prepared choirs for a great many major works, particularly with the Oregon Symphony.

Most recently Browne has been guest conductor/clinician at All-State Conferences in Nebraska, New York, and Idaho. He is frequently invited to work with high school and college choirs, and has appeared in this capacity at University of Washington, North Texas State University, University of Nebraska at Omaha, and several others.

Browne has served on national committees of the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Choral Directors Association, where he was Northwest Regional President for two years. He has recorded on the labels of Freshwater Records, Telarc, Clarion, and Albany Records. In 2000, he was chosen as one of the “Music Educators of the Year”, by MENC National.
